SARACEN
TOWERS
They
belong to the defensive system of the coast and hillside villages
developed by the people of Liguria to protect their homes from the
incursions of the Barbary pirates. In Strada Punta San Pietro, on the
hills behind Ospedaletti there is a square tower used for sighting and
signaling, built in 1558, in a dominant points. The defensive tower,
still visible today in Via Roma (at the crossing between Via di
Pettinengo with Via Pio VII), was completed in 1597 and is as described
in the documents of those days: “a square building, two and thirty
spans in altitude; on the level of the cordon a vaulted, strong enough
to sustain the artillery and two look-out towers”.
