SANT'ERASMO CHURCH (Sailors' Chapel)
It was built around the year 1300 by the Knights Saint John of Jerusalem
(later Knights of Rhodes and then Knights of Malta) to give shelter
to the pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land and was dedicated to Saint
John the Baptist. On 11th February 1814 it hosted Pope Pius VII. In
1824, this chapel was dedicated to Sant'Erasmo, patron saint of sailors
(celebrated on the first Sunday of June). At the beginning of this century
it became a warehouse for building materials and only after a few years
was restored, reconsecrated an reopened to the faithful. Nowadays, like
a miniature museum, it houses votive offerings and relics of seafaring
life (model ships, anchors, votive offerings).
